German Tour Guide: You vill find more on Germany's contributions to ze arts in ze pamphlets ve have provided.
Brian Griffin: Yeah, about your pamphlet... uh, I'm not seeing anything about German history between 1939 and 1945. There's just a big gap.
Tour guide: Everyone vas on vacation. On your left is Munich's first city hall, erected in 15...
Brian Griffin: Wait, what are you talking about? Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and...
Tour Guide: We were invited. Punch vas served. Check vit Poland.
Brian Griffin: You can't just ignore those years. Thomas Mann fled to America because of Nazism's stranglehold on Germany.
Tour guide: Nope, nope. He left to manage a Dairy Queen.
Brian Griffin: A Dairy Queen? That's preposterous.
Tour guide: I vill hear no more insinuations about the German people. Nothing bad happened. Sie werden sich hinsetzen. Sie werden ruhig sein. Sie werden nicht beleidigen Deutschland. (You will sit down. You will shut up. You will not insult Germany.)
[throws his hand up in a Hitler salute]- The Family Guy (via the Internet Movie Data Base)
I love Social Studies class. History is quickly becoming my very favorite subject, and I'm lucky enough to have a thoughtful and engaging teacher. At the moment we're covering the period of global facist/communist empowerment leading up to the outbreak of WWII.
In class today, my teacher made this observation: "I know you guys love TV shows like The Family Guy that make jokes [about Hitler, etc.], but it's really not a joking matter. To joke about Hitler..."
My classmates and I were quick to make the point that the cariacatures of Hitler and other evil leaders in today's comedy are not making light of World War II. We aren't trivializing the memories of any Holocaust victims or any brave pioneers of Freedom and Liberty who gave their lives in Allied uniforms.
We are, however, trivializing the German point of view and the German leadership during World War II. With damned good reason.
Hitler was a powerful leader, yes. He was also completely insane, ridiculous, and a major idiot. He was wrong about facism, Jews, his Aryan race... about everything.
I realize that our generation is, of course, further removed from the war than our predecessors. It may seem like we treat it with nonchalance, and yes, to an extent, we probably don't understand the horrors that encompass a World War.
But when we make fun of Hitler, we're making fun of Hitler and the WWII German ideals.
Not things that really deserve respect.
